Road Stimulus Projects
September 14 ,2009

Mount Clemens – Construction should begin this week on the Road Commission of Macomb County’s fourth project paid for by the federal stimulus funds aimed at jump-starting the economy.

Road Commissioner Larry Moloney said the $322,000 paving of 2.6 miles of North Avenue in Armada Township and .6 miles of 26 Mile east and west of Broughton in Ray Township should be completed in six to eight weeks.

“This is another needed road project that we’re constructing this year thanks to the federal stimulus bill designed to put people back to work,” Moloney said. “If not for the stimulus funds, it would have been delayed because we just didn’t have the money to do it this year.”

In all, Macomb County received $17.25 million for 19 road projects from President Barack Obama’s $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). About half of those projects will be handled by the cities where they are located and the rest by the Road Commission.

The Road Commission of Macomb County was the first county road agency to get projects approved under the stimulus bill and it has three other ARRA paving projects currently underway.

Bob Hoepfner, the Road Commission’s County Highway Engineer, said two of those projects are on 10 Mile, from Phlox to Hayes in Eastpointe; and from Lawrence to Center Line’s western city limits at a total cost of about $918,000. The other stimulus funded road project underway is on 12 Mile from Palm Beach to Hoover in Warren at a cost of about $550,000.

A fifth stimulus-funded repaving project that is expected to be completed this year is Schoenherr from 23 to 24 Mile Road. Bids will be taken on Friday, Sept. 18 for that project.

“When the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was proposed, the Road Commission began putting together a list of needed projects that could be started quickly. So, when the bill was approved by Congress, we were ready to start the process to get them approved and started,” Hoepfner said.

He said bids on the other five Road Commission projects under the stimulus bill should be taken and awarded this year so they’ll be ready to start next spring.

Along with the $9.7 million in stimulus projects the Road Commission worked on this year, it also has been managing, developing and building another $63 million in road construction and improvement projects.
